Are there consistent complaints about this person?

Oftentimes, your employees will tell you what’s wrong with their coworkers—not because they want someone to get fired, but because they know a good thing when they see it. If you hear several complaints about one employee over time, it might be worth investigating further. After all, even unpleasant employees can be good at their jobs. But make sure you take each complaint seriously and address them individually; don’t just fire somebody because other people don’t like him or her.

 

Does their work product match the job they are hired for?

If someone is supposed to do marketing, and their writing shows a distinct lack of creativity, then they are not doing their job. If they continue these patterns over time, it is probably time for them to leave.
