7 Tips to Get Your Employees Unstuck

7 Tips to Get Your Employees Unstuck

Being stuck isn’t always bad; it can be an opportunity to reflect and learn what you need to do next. When your employees are stuck, it can be hard work to get them moving again, but it’s worth the effort. Here are 7 ways to get your employees unstuck and moving forward towards greatness.

1) Start With a Self-Check

Before looking at what’s going on in your team, step back and take a look at yourself. Often when people are struggling at work, there’s something about their boss that isn’t working for them either. It could be that you don’t let them make decisions, or you have a particular management style that doesn’t fit with how they operate. If so, fix it first before changing anything else.

2) Make an Action Plan

The first step in getting your employees unstuck is to develop an action plan. Spend some time brainstorming what you’d like to see each employee do differently. When you are done, take a look at your list and rank them in order of importance.

3) Create Accountability

Accountability is an important part of getting your employees moving. While you can’t set specific deadlines for them, you can keep them focused on what needs to be done and make sure they have a clear vision of how they can get there. Whether you do that with a simple weekly status meeting or by offering assistance when needed, they’ll know exactly where they stand at all times and will appreciate your efforts to help. No one wants to feel like a slacker on their team!

4) Talk About Development Goals

The first step to getting your employees unstuck is understanding what’s holding them back in their current position. Are they bored with their work? Have they plateaued, and are not being given new challenges? What does success look like for them going forward? And most importantly, why aren’t they meeting these expectations or goals? Dig into these questions with your team members, make sure you have an open conversation about their growth opportunities, and come up with a strategy that will get them moving forward again.

5) Hold Them Accountable

If you’re having trouble getting someone on your team moving in a productive direction, consider holding them accountable. It may sound harsh, but there are times when a good kick in the pants can inspire improvement. Keep in mind that accountability doesn’t mean being cruel; set reasonable expectations for improvement and find ways to reward positive progress.
